On this, the penultimate day before a new year is born, it seems appropriate to bid adieu to 2010 – peace be upon it – and consecrate the new year with a blessing.
Truth be told, I will miss 2010. I lived an amazing and blessed year in sync with my theme of Plan Be, in which I lived in accordance with 12 monthly BEattitudes – Begin, Believe, Beyond, Belong. Befriend, Beauty, Because, Benevolent, Beatnik, Bedazzle, Beget, Bestow. Holding these BEattitudes in my heart and allowing them to unfold in my life throughout the year was a gift to behold. I learned much about myself and the sacrality of the universe in the process and I know that 2010 will live on and continue to bestow its beattitudes to me as time progresses.
And so in tribute to these beattitudes that I am remiss to let go of, I am anchoring an attitude of authenticity, a spiritual intention of ressurection and a state of action and doing-ness to 2011. My new year theme will be Get Real, in honour of all those juicy RE words – you know the ones – Reinvention, Restoration, etc. But instead of having only 12 monthly words, this year’s theme will encompass weekly RE words and monthly mantras. More on that in the new year.
But in the meantime, let us bless this space of a year that is about to unfold before us. Rabbi Herschel defines the blessedness of living best when he says, “Just to be live is holy; just to be is a blessing.”
May 2011 be the year your soul calls to you in its clearest voice with its dearest desire.
A Blessing for the New Year
by John O’Donohue
On the day when
The weight deadens
On your shoulders
And you stumble,
May the clay dance
To balance you.
And when your eyes
Freeze behind
The gray window
And the ghost of loss
Gets into you,
May a flock of colors,
Indigo, red, green
And azure blue,
Come to awaken in you
A meadow of delight.
When the canvas frays
In the curragh of thought
And a stain of ocean
Blackens beneath you,
May there come across the waters
A path of yellow moonlight
To bring you safely home.
May the nourishment of the earth be yours,
May the clarity of light be yours,
May the fluency of ocean be yours,
May the protection of the ancestors be yours.
